LAB 4. Atwood's Machine: Newton's Second Law
Objectives: To determine the acceleration of a system and the tension
in the string.
Equipment: Modified Atwood's machine: dynamics cart and track,
meterstick, stopwatch or photogate and a set of masses.
Type of Lab: Open ended

LAB 5. Frictional Forces
Objectives: Determination of static and kinetic coefficients of friction
using two different methods.
Equipment: Rectangular blocks of different materials (felt and wood), spring scale, wooden board that can be used as an inclined plane, protractor.

KEY ITEMS:

• When drawing FBDs, it is important to be able to determine what is
  the agent of a force acting on the sytem. If the agent cannot be named,
  then the force does not exist.

• Sometimes the students make simple errors in determining the
  component of the force vectors in inclined plane problems. They
  assume that the y-component always correspondes to the sine
  of the angle (and x with cosine).

• Another source of error is the assumption that the gravitational
  force 'cancels' out with the normal force or that the gravitational force
  and the normal force are an action-reaction pair.
  I ask them to pay attention to other force components that may act in
  the vertical direction.
